Simply put, an energy barcode is an original painting style made from layers of repetitive lines. Every color chosen carries its own unique frequency, such as peace, grounding, expansion, or divine feminine energy. The finished piece holds a unique frequency meant to shift the energy of any space it's in.
I created this painting style years ago when I started seeing my creative time as meditative. The whole process has become a beautiful ritual that does wonders for my mental health.
Painting grounds me. It's the time when I'm thinking about everything and nothing at the same time. I get clarity. I walk away feeling more like myself, more settled in my own skin. Things come to me intuitively during these sessions, insight I wasn't actively looking for but somehow arrives anyway.
When I was working in corporate America and struggling with my mental health, painting was my escape. It was what I did to stop thinking about the stress I had to return to the next day. In a lot of ways, painting is a form of prayer for me. It's when I go to God, Source, the Universe, whatever you want to call it, to ask questions or release what I'm holding onto. It's also a time of gratitude. Some days I'm simply grateful to be alive, or grateful for where I've landed in my life.
I start my painting process by burning incense, smoke cleansing the canvas, and intuitively picking the colors that are calling me. Before I begin, I quietly ask that whatever energy wants to come through will appear.
Each painting starts with a single line across the canvas. The line loops and swirls, creating an organic wave that moves across the surface like its own current. The next line goes on top of the first, in a different color, and the stacked lines continue until the canvas is full of color. From there, I use a palette knife and glide it across the swirls and loops, adding complementary colors on top. The knife brings a certain texture to each line that I just love.
I continue to layer and stack, line after line, color after color, until something shifts. Until the piece itself says: this is my code, this is my frequency.
It’s funny because for about 5 years I was thinking, my art is energy but I don’t know how to describe it. And then the self-doubt crept in. “People are going to think I'm crazy for describing my art as something energetic!”, I thought. That fear and self-doubt didn’t come from just anywhere.
In many religious households, anything spiritual outside of what's taught on Sunday gets labeled as something to fear, not something to explore. I grew up around that same fear, so admitting, even to myself, that my art was energy work felt like a big leap. But I know what I feel when painting and when a painting is complete. It felt energetic. Alive!
And then last year, as I was working on a painting…it hit me!
I realized that my art style reminded me of colorful barcodes, the way the lines stack and layer. But instead of holding a price or a product code, each line and color in my paintings holds a frequency. That's the whole idea behind the name, every painting is its own kind of code, just one that speaks in color and frequency. That realization resonated within me and I felt so good about it!
Now let's briefly talk about color and the energy it carries. Color is energy, literally. Every color we see is a different frequency of light. Some shades feel grounding, others feel expansive, and others feel like love or peace. When I pick colors for a painting, I'm not just thinking about what looks good together; I'm thinking about what frequency I want that piece to carry.
Each color is also tied to a chakra, something I'll dive deeper into in a future post. Crown chakra colors, like violet and white, carry a connection to higher consciousness and spiritual alignment. Heart chakra colors, like green and pink, carry love, balance, and compassion. So when you're drawn to a piece, it's rarely random. You're responding to a frequency that your own energy recognizes, even if you can't quite explain why.
That's the heart of what an Energy Barcode really is. Not just a painting style, but a frequency made visible, one line and one color at a time. Every piece is intentional, one of a kind, and built to shift the energy of whatever space it enters.
